Gift of Tongues: The Real Deal

Last night we had a party for our outgoing Bishop. The former Bishops and current Bishop of the ward made up this rap. It was quite hilarious watching Bishop Kunkel's reaction.

Armchair Apocrypha

I love Andrew Bird! Today was the perfect day to listen to Armchair Apocrypha. It has been a while since I listened to it straight through.

If you like "Indie", using the term very loosely, multi-instrumentalist's who are prolific whistlers ( he makes it sound like an instrument, he is that good), then I highly recommend checking him out.

I mentioned the whistling only because I am obsessed or maybe envious of those who can. Reason is, and maybe I shouldn't mention this, is that I can't whistle. Yeah that is right, I can't whistle. I have had over 30 years to work on it and can't wrap my mind, mouth or breath around it.  Phew that felt good, probably as good as when Clay Aiken came out of the closet this morning. Come on who didn't see that one coming?!! I digress.

Listening to this album was a  sublime counter point to my hectic work day.

Update

My car is fixed. It was "minor", just the Oxygen Sensor. However when driven it felt like it was going to stall.  The part wasn't delivered until today.
The best part is that it was covered by the warranty. Yippee! I paid 0 dollars. That is one great thing about purchasing a Hyundai.

Really?... Come On!

Yes that is my car and Yes that is a Tow Truck.
So my engine light came on at lunch today. It was flashing madly at me. I have never seen an engine light flash. So I promptly drove back to work and parked it. This of course was without even getting food. I was starving because I didn't get a break until 2:30.  Yes I was having a spectacular day.

I called the dealer and they said "Don't Drive It!!" So I had to call a tow truck to take it less than 3 miles to the dealer. Once again AAA came in handy. However calling them conjures up bad memories from my last car.

I am a bit worried, this car is only a 1 1/2 years old and has run perfectly up until now. Cross your fingers that it is only minor. I also noticed that the back break light was out, so at least they will fix that. It is under warranty (PHEW!) so hopefully it won't cost a thing to get it fixed.

Part of me feels a bit blessed because it did happen today. I am leaving for Yosemite in the morning and it would have been a disaster if it happened on the way down.

Story Corps

One of my favorite things is to listen to Story Corps on Friday mornings. It is such a brilliant concept. I love anything that involves recording history. I also get it as a podcast so if I miss any I can listen to them later.

This one story made me crack up the other day at work. When I become a 90 year old woman, I want to have great stories to tell. It is best to listen to her tell it.

I also highly recommend picking up a copy of Listening is an Act of Love from your local library, bookstore or borrow my copy. It is a great read!

This is something I would love to do with my Family one day.

Happy Birthday Noah!!!

Noah is all boy. He loves Cars & Trucks, Lightning McQueen, Construction Trucks and just wanting to play. He thinks I am cool because I own a car, live in Cal i forn ia (think Arnold) near the sharks and strongly believe I own my own Airplane (how else would I get to his house).  He has a way of stating things that make me giggle.

Happy Birthday Noah, I love you!

TV is ruling my life.

OK so it is not ruling my life however I am attached more than I would like to be. I just looked at the new fall line up and I have at least 1 show every night of the week. Last year it was much more but I cut a lot out and some were cancelled.
So here is what my Tivo will be recording:
Monday- Chuck
Tuesday-House, Eli Stone
Wednesday - Pushing Daisies
Thursday - The OFFICE!!!, 3o ROCK!!!
Friday - Life

Then there is Lost, Scrubs and Top Chef.

I guess it isn't so bad but then again this is only the major networks. What will Basic Cable offer?

Out of the mouth of... Noah

My nephew Noah started Kindergarten this year. I can't believe he is that old.
I was speaking with him today on the phone and asked what his favorite part about going to school.
His reply "I really like riding the school bus, that is the best part." A few minutes pass and then he said "Ooh I also like when we get to go home. Because we get to play on the playground and RIDE the bus home. And then we are home for the rest of the day."

I had to laugh. Very insightful. When my Sister asked him whey he didn't like being in the classroom he replied "Because you have to work and that is boring".

So he won't be an academic.

Happy Birthday Dad!

My Dad is a great guy. I'm not lying. Anyone who meets him loves him immediately. He is just so cool.

When we lived in Missouri we would travel to Utah to visit family. Of course with a family of 6 kids there was no flying. So we would pile up in the Station Wagon, you know the red with the wood paneling, and drive to the Grandparent's house. The trip was split into two days and we would choose between boring and more boring. Either Nebraska/Wyoming or Kansas/Colorado. Now Colorado wasn't boring once you passed Denver but prior to that it was flat and ugly.  Every gas station attendant, Waiter or Waitress, Cashier, Hotel Desk Clerk, Maid, etc. knew everything about our family. Dad would talk ,they would listen with glee and we rolled our eyes.
He has never changed.

In my early twenties he was determined to get his single (and beautiful) daughter married off. So he carried a picture of me around in his wallet and would hand it out to any desirable young man (he liked). Of course not letting me in on the plan, I would receive phone calls from strangers asking me out. I would go (most of the time) and even made some friends out of it, but it had to stop. My mother banned him from attempting to set me up with relative strangers.  Instead now he just announces that I am his single daughter whenever I visit. I guess I don't blame him, he really has my best interest at heart.

My fondest memories include: Going to work with him in Missouri, He would have to travel to Omaha or Nauvoo and he would take one of us on the road trip with him. I loved that one on one time with him. He introduced me to Dr.Pepper (bad dad), I didn't like it at the time but became addicted years later (I don't drink it anymore, 9 yrs and counting). Watching him work with wood. I know it is one of his favorite things to do, something he and his brother inherited from their Dad. All of the camping and fishing trips. Helping with yard work, cleaning the garage.

You are the greatest Dad in the world and I have 5 other people that will back me up on that. You are also an awesome Grandpa and I am sure the Grandkids will agree. You have successfully (none of us are in jail...yet) raised children who love and adore you.

I hope that you have a wonderful Birthday and that considering last year, this year will be much better.

I love you!

She Caved...

My sister Melissa finally caved and started a blog. I look forward to reading her posts. Unlike me she is very clever and witty.

I'm Lost

It is a strange feeling not to have Internet connection at home. I feel disconnected when I can't jump on my laptop and check email and other blogs. I was considering going to a movie yesterday, but how does one check movie times without Internet connection? It is crazy how much the Internet has changed the way we function in the past few years.

A-Gril is going crazy....She has a lot of homework to do and without the Internet it is difficult.

Anyhow Comcast will be out tomorrow and I will no longer have to sneak onto my blog at work.
